But each of the other five said, "No, I did not do such things." So they had an argument. There came an old man on a white horse. He was a wise man. Then the merchant told him that he had lost gold and asked him for help.
"All right," said the old man. "Do you see my white horse? It is a very clever horse. It will help you to find the thief.I will putmy horse into your tent. Each man will go into the tent and pull my horse"s tail. When the thief pulls its tail, the horse will neigh;when any otherman pulls its tail, the horse will not neigh."
The old man asked the five merchants to go in one by one and pull his horse"s tail. The merchants followed the man"s instruction, but the horse did not neigh for one time.
Then the old man said,"Now everyone must come up to me and show me your hand please."
He went up to the first man and put his face to the man"s hands. Then he went to the second man and did the same…
At last, the old man pointed to the fifth one and said, "You are the thief."
The man fell on his knees and said, "Please forgive me. I took his gold and hid it in a hole behind the big tree." The merchant found his gold.
After that, the merchant asked the old man, "Your horse did not neigh. How did you find the thief?"
The old man smiled and said, "I know that my horse never neighs.I put some strong-smelling oil on its tail. Four men pulled its tail, but the thief did not pull it. His hands did not smell of the oil."

   Children Who Changed the World

  一Anne Frank
Annelies Marie “Anne” Frank was a German-born Jewish girl from the city of Frankfurt. She gained international fame posthumously following the publication of her diary which documents her experiences hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands in World War II.
Anne and her family moved to Amsterdam in 1933 after the Nazis gained power in Germany, and were trapped by the occupation of the Netherlands, which began in 1940. As persecutions against the Jewish population increased, the family went into hiding in July 1942 in hidden rooms in her father Otto Frank’s office building. After two years, the group was betrayed and transported to concentration camps. Seven months after her arrest, Anne Frank died of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, within days of the death of her sister, Margot Frank. Her father Otto, the only survivor of the group, returned to Amsterdam after the war to find that her diary had been saved, and his efforts led to its publication in 1947. It was translated from its original Dutch and first published in English in 1952 as The Diary of a Young Girl. Anne Frank has been acknowledged for the quality of her writing, and has become one of the most renowned and discussed of Holocaust victims.
  二、Samantha Smith
Image: 1985 USSR Stamp with “Samantha Smith” in Cyrillic.
Samantha Reed Smith was an American schoolgirl from Manchester, Maine who became famous in the Cold War-era United States and Soviet Union. In November 1982, when Smith was 10 years old, she wrote to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov, seeking to understand why the relations between the Soviet Union and the United States were so tense. Her letter was published in the Soviet newspaper Pravda. Samantha was happy to discover that her letter had been published, however, she had not received a reply. She then sent a letter to the Soviet Union’s Ambassador to the United States asking if Mr. Andropov intended to respond. On April 26, 1983, she received a response from Andropov. Smith attracted extensive media attention in both countries as a “Goodwill Ambassador”, and became known as “America’s Youngest Ambassador” participating in peacemaking activities in Japan. She wrote a book and co-starred in a television series, before her death at the age of 13 in the Bar Harbor Airlines Flight 1808 plane crash.
  三、Hector Pieterson
Image: Sam Nzima’s famous June 16, 1976 photograph of Mbuyisa Makhubo carrying Hector Pieterson, accompanied by Hector’s sister, Antoinette.
Hector Pieterson (1964 – 16 June 1976) became the iconic image of the 1976 Soweto up rising in apartheid South Africa when a news photograph by Sam Nzima of the dying Hector being carried by a fellow student, was published around the world. He was killed at the age of 12 when the police opened fire on protesting students. For years, June 16 stood as a symbol of resistance to the brutality of the apartheid government. Today, it is known as National Youth Day — a day on which South Africans honour young people and bring attention to their needs.

  Angels in Indiana

In September 1960, I woke up one morning with six hungry babies and just 75 cents in my pocket. Their father was gone. The boys ranged from three months to seven years; their sister was two.
I scrubbed1 the kids until they looked brand new and then put on my best homemade dress. I loaded them into the rusty2 old car and drove off to find a job. The seven of us went to every factory, store and restaurant in our small town. No luck.
The last place we went to, just a few miles out of town, called the Big Wheel. An old lady named Granny owned the place and she peeked3 out of the window from time to time at all those kids. She needed someone on the graveyard4 shift, 11 at night until seven in the morning. She paid 65 cents an hour and I could start that night.
On Christmas Eve, the usual customers were drinking coffee in the Big Wheel. It was still dark and I couldn"t see much, but there appeared to be some dark shadows in the car -- or was that just a trick of the night? Something certainly looked different, but it was hard to tell what. When I reached the car I peered warily5 into one of the side windows. Then my jaw dropped in amazement. My old battered6 car was full to the top with boxes of all shapes and sizes. I quickly opened the driver"s side door, scrambled inside and kneeled in the front facing the back seat. Reaching back, I pulled off the lid of the top box. Inside was a whole case of little blue jeans, sizes 2-10! I looked inside another box: It was full of shirts to go with the jeans. Then I peeked inside some of the other boxes: There were candy and nuts and bananas and bags of groceries. There was an enormous ham for baking, and canned vegetables and potatoes. There was pudding and cookies, pie filling and flour. There was a whole bag of laundry supplies and cleaning items. And there were five toy trucks and one beautiful little doll.
As I drove back through empty streets as the sun slowly rose on the most amazing Christmas Day of my life, I was sobbing with gratitude. And I will never forget the joy on the faces of my little ones that precious morning.
Yes, there were angels in Indiana that long-ago December.
